BEYOND THE FILM - DRIFT
AN INTERVIEW WITH COLBY LESKO
Aussie Fishing Photographer, Writer and Charter Captain @colbylesko
When did you start fishing and how’d you get into it?
My dad and older brothers dragged me along fishing since I was as young as I can remember, mostly walking for trout spinning rivers. They got me into it and then the obsession just grew from there. I started with redfin and carp and moved into Murray cod and a whole range of species.
You did a stint as a fishing guide, what was that like?
I loved working as a guide and did this for a few years, mostly on the great barrier reef but did some barra stuff as well. It was great being on the water everyday and I got to learn lots and experience plenty of remote places. Best part was seeing clients catch the fish of a lifetime.
How did you feel when you found out you were selected to feature in The Film Invitational competition this year?
I was happy I had been picked as it is a great opportunity. I felt the pressure to catch fish a bit when filming the film but that's all part of it!
You decided to showcase a drift on the Murray river, why did you choose that particular trip?
It's just a special place on this earth and some of my favourite memories are drifting this river. The cod and fishing style is very unique and it's the only place in the world where you can do it. As well as this the topwater bites are very impressive and it's some of the best topwater fishing you can have in southern Australia. Perfect for a TFI film.
Your passion for Murray Cod comes through strong in the film, what is it that you love so much about big cod on surface?
They are an extremely impressive creature and grow to massive sizes. People are blown away at their size and that they can live in freshwater rivers and I still am to this day. Catching a big one on a surface lure is the ultimate challenge and when you finally get a big one the feeling is unbeatable. Also, getting to spend a few moments with one of these old river beasts is something you will never forget.
How can people watch the film?
Just get on the internet and google 'The Film Invitational' this will take you to the TFI website where you can pay $5 bucks Australian to watch the 10 films and vote. ACCESS HERE
If you aren’t fishing where would we find you?
There isn't too much time im not fishing but if im not im either spending time with my family or hunting!
What is one thing not many people know about you?
I have a bachelor degree in fisheries science.
List 5 things you never leave home without on a cod fishing trip?
